    Dr Who is Back

I don't blame you for not being here.
Just as you can't blame me for not being there.
I'm sorry I rained on your fairy tale parade, but the reality rain forecast before the thing began.
Were things different, who knows what might have been?
As it stands, these paths are divergent.
    This rope split in twain.

I spent the afternoon swimming in a pool, in the rain, drinking Coronas.
I swam and laughed at the storm clouds and laughed at laugh and laughed at expectations.
I spent the evening entertaining guests in my house (while still wearing swim trunks).
The sister of the redhead I may or may not be infatuated with came up to visit one of my friends.
The redhead came up afterwards to collect her sister and had a great big smile on her face.
    We chatted.
After she left, I sent her a text reading "You looked quite fetching just now."
    I got a reply, "Thanks. :)"

This is another of those nights that refuses to end.
Drawn out towards forever by my loneliness.

I'd like to find a girl who could take the measure of me.
Though I am amiable, I know I can be difficult.
I am easy to love, and give love freely.
There's just the thick protective shell to get through first.

    Whee, net is back!
Hooray, the net is back! Time to celebrate by posting awful geeky puns.

    1. So a while back, a friend of mine (Labcoat) and I were talking about Superman and his disguise as Clark Kent. Now, as everyone knows, the only disguise that Superman employs to masquerade as Clark Kent is a pair of glasses. A steenkin' pair of glasses! So then we fell to wondering, what would happen if Superman actually NEEDED corrective eyewear? I mean, in the course of normal events, he wouldn't be able to use his X-ray vision! Or his heat vision! He'd be in deep trouble if he had to go fight some alien robot wasps or something. He'd clearly have to have some sort of secure eyewear to ensure that during the fight his glasses wouldn't break. That would be lame.

But now the question arises: what happens if he leaves this tougher eyewear back at the Fortress of Solitude when the time comes to fight a monster?

    2. So on RPGnet, there was a thread a while back about one poster's workplace, and the reactions that occurred when they put up a gay-friendly sticker in the window. The thread wore on, and [info]gammahamster made a post where he used the term "het folk" to refer to heterosexuals. Thierry, another poster on RPGnet, pointed out that "het folk" sounds like an entry in the Monstrous Manual.

I survey the scene. It's time.

    3. So I've been looking over the Eberron campaign setting. There is a class called an artificer, which can make all sorts of neat gadgets and whatnot.

I've been wanting to create a tiefling artificer...

    Why? )

...I'll be here all night, folks. Try the veal.

    Computer Repair Weekend Continues
A client of Jane's mom had problems with her laptop and someone (probably Jane's aunt) mentioned that I work on PCs for them, so I found myself accepting yet another commission to "remove a virus."

What they thought was a virus was actually a case of "Elderly People With a Laptop."  I know that sounds terribly age-ist, and to be fair, the machine was actually in pretty good shape, but I'm pretty sure it would have occurred to most computer users of my generation and younger (in other words, all of you) to maybe see if there's a physical on/off switch for the wireless.

I can't bring myself to charge more than my minimum fee (fifty bucks).  I barely did anything to it.

I slept for nearly 13 hours.  Got home last night a little after 8, was out before 11.  Woke up briefly a few minutes after six this morning, then right back to sleep until almost noon.  That, dear readers, is better than two normal nights for me.

Haven't done a whole lot this afternoon.  I'm not planning on going downtown for fireworks or anything this evening;  in fact, I'll be glad when the celebration's over so I won't have to hear the damn concert commercial again.

Got the run-games-at-Archon e-mail this week.  Will probably run linked Spycraft missions, as they went over quite well the last time I was there.  Or, I'll go right off the rails and run Fading Suns.

And, so long, Jesse Helms.  Unfortunate that it took so long.

Catwaxing profit: Notes from 4th Street Friday panel 1

My fellow members of the Society of Voluptuaries who were with me at the con type much faster than I do, so they took on the task of attempting to transcribe the panels. Which they should be finishing up for sharing any day now. (Hint, hint.) My job was to write down anything that particularly jumped out or caught my interest (or that Steve wanted written down, since he had neither laptop nor analog input devices at hand). In the interest of avoiding other writing work, I present the tidbits noted from the first Friday evening panel. Feel free to discuss any or all in comments.

Panel 1: From Cool Idea to Story

“It’s not about the characters, it’s about the relationship between two characters.” — Marissa Lingen

“I like a last line that leaves you wondering while still wrapping things up in the story.” — Ellen Klages

“The scale of the beginning dictates the ending.” — Will Shetterly

“The beginning you have creates very specific expectations.” — Alec Austin

    “Narrative proprioception. ” — Ellen

“I think it’s a good thing to have a closet full of unfinished story ideas.” — Will

“Your trunk stories are like the nurse logs in a forest ecology.” — Mris, quoting John M. Ford

“Part of the art of writing is making everything in the story count.” — Jim Frenkel

“Marissa and Ellen both use a lot of touch-oriented words in their descriptive speech, and both also write their stories out of order. Is there a connection or just coincidence?”

“Sometimes I like to write down my scenes on 3×5 cards so that I can arrange them in front of me and touch and move them around.” — question from audience, answer from Ellen

This looks really cool. Apparantly Joss Whedon has made this three part show which they are streaming for free over the internet in a couple of weeks time. The trailer looks like a lot of fun. :)

    Happy 4th of July, everyone.

I'd like to recommend a short story to everyone, "With The Sword He Must Be Slain" by David Drake. It's in the collection "Grimmer than Hell," freely available electronically here. I urge people to buy a copy. Drake writes the best military SF that I've read. Better than Heinlein, Haldeman, Stackpole, Steakley, alla thems.

"With the Sword..." isn't his best work, but the conclusion is perfect. I want to discuss it with people, but I can't. Because nobody's read "With the Sword". So. Here it is.

David Drake is a good author to read when thinking about war. He served in Vietnam with the Blackhorse Armored Cav, after being drafted from law school. Served as a tank crewman and interrogator. When he came home, he wrote about war - what he had studied as part of his history degree, and more importantly what he had seen during his service.

Also check out Other Times than Peace, specifically the story "The Interrogation Team."

Drake isn't like Clancy, writing about something he's got no personal experience with. While obviously he's got SF and fantasy in there, he's got personal knowledge of the most important things.

Go check him out, please. [info]seekingferret, this applies to you especially (in light of your position on the S-G thread). And once again, happy Fourth.

    It's starting to sink in
In 23 days, I'll be moving to a foreign country where I don't know anyone, don't speak the language ("猫はテーべルの下にいる" isn't going to get me very far) and don't have a definite job prospect lined up, and I'll be staying there for years. One at the minimum, maybe longer if we really like it--or if, say, the U.S. economy crashes and we don't want to come back for a while. I mean, I have a job lead from [info]softlykarou's uncle (nepotism is what marriage is for, right?) but it's not guaranteed. I'm sure I'll find something, but it's the uncertainty that bothers me most. I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know exactly where we're going (Hiroshima prefecture is still all we know)...blah. That and I'll be moving away from everyone else and I'll be in an opposite time zone, so I won't really be able to talk to people except through time-delayed livejournal posts unless people are staying up on AIM until 3 in the morning. I can meet other ex-pats while I'm there, I guess, but if all I ever talk to is Americans, how am I going to practice my Japanese? Having to pay $2K for a plane ticket didn't put me in a good mood either. -_-

It's uncertain, at the moment. I think that's where my worries come from.

That there is a lot of rifles.
"This is an American vehicle known as the "Ontos," which the U.S. Army began using in 1955 as a low-cost anti-tank weapon that could be flown on cargo planes. It had a crew of three, six M40A1C 106mm recoilless rifles, and four M8C .50 caliber spotting rifles. It weighed 20,000 pounds and could go 100 miles at 30 mph."

The things I wish I could say at work some days...
Welcome to IS. Useful information is one thing we most definitely do not deal with.

The reason your image file looks different when viewing it in Internet Explorer, Photoshop, and MS Picture viewer is because of gnomes.

No we do not have the transparency. Hence, why it is marked as "missing" in the index.

Of course our ten-thousand-dollar production scanner that handles 4 inch by 5 inch transparencies can be adjusted to do a high-resolution scan of an 8x10 picture of your dog-faced relative.  Just pass me that hacksaw.

No, we still do not have that transparency. Yes, we have physically checked all possible locations.

Due to the fact that our printer overheats and melts itself into slag whenever we print more than two catalogs at a time, we will be printing catalog orders on a "special" rotation. The first person to ask me when their order will be ready will be rotated to the bottom of the queue.

Oh, I was wrong. We do have that transparency. It's in our special processing program. I'll call you back in a couple of hours once I've finished digesting.

Yes, that does mean that I ate it.

So the downside to a Shuttle PC is that if the power supply gives out, there's apparently no place around I can just go pick up a replacement, I have to order one online. :/

And great timing too, day before July 4th, which means I'll have to wait the entire weekend before it gets here even with overnight shipping.

...and now I don't have phone/cable/Internet. There are wires down across the street. RCN refuses to send someone out until Saturday. I'm mooching off of a neighbor's WiFi to post this.

So if you don't see me on and around, this is why.

    Happy not-really-a-holiday.
I'll be working from home tomorrow. Hopefully, it will only be for about an hour in the morning.

If it's not, I forsee a day of work ahead of me.

Who designs a new, untested process to run on a *holiday*? And then give it to the new guy, who doesn't really know what he's doing, to oversee it???
